Baghdad, 12 August 2013 - The United Nations is marking International Youth Day with an urgent call on the Government of Iraq to protect and empower young people, as a worsening security situation and limited employment prospects drive youth to seek a life outside the country.

Baghdad, 11 August 2013 - The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, expresses his shock and outrage following the series of coordinated bomb attacks that targeted markets, shopping streets and parks in Baghdad and other locations over the country while people were celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadan. 

Baghdad, 7 August 2013 – As the month of Ramadan Al-Mubarak comes to a close, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, wishes the Iraqi people and Government a blessed Eid-ul-Fitr, on behalf of the entire UN family in Iraq.

“Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward”

This year’s observance of International Youth Day focuses on the issue of youth migration.  Of the annual total of some 214 million international migrants, young people constitute more than 10 per cent, yet too little is known about their struggles and experiences. 

New York, 2 August 2013 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Mr. Nickolay Mladenov of Bulgaria as his Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Baghdad 29 July 2013 – The Acting Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin expressed his deep concern following today’s new wave of car bombings that killed and injured dozens more Iraqis.

New York, 29 July 2013 - The Secretary-General is alarmed by the deterioration of the security situation in Iraq.   He condemns in the strongest terms the acts of terrorism and the heightened sectarian violence, which are aimed at ripping apart the country's social fabric.  The reported killing today of at least 50 people in a wave of car bombings in predominantly Shiite areas is just the latest occurrence of the kind of heinous violence which is becoming all too commonplace.  The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Iraq and wishes the wounded a speedy recovery. He urges the Iraqi authorities to bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice.

Baghdad, 23 July 2013 - The Acting Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (A-SRSG), Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, condemns in the strongest terms the assassination on 22 July of the Head of the Arab bloc in the Kirkuk Provincial Council and Deputy Chairman of the Provincial Council Security Committee, Sheikh Abdallah Sami Al-Assi, and two of his bodyguards.

Baghdad, 21 July 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, condemns in the strongest terms the series of suicide attacks, car bombings and other violent acts that have killed and injured hundreds of innocent people.

Baghdad, 10 July 2013 - As Muslims around the world are observing the holy month of Ramadan, I would like to wish a blessed and peaceful month to all Iraqis on behalf of the entire UN family in Iraq.
