In the framework of their significant efforts towards supporting the Iraqi government in overcoming the devastating impact of water shortage, UNESCO and the European Union (EU) launched the phase II of the "Advanced Survey of Hydrogeological Resources in Iraq" (ASHRI-2), a pioneering initiative that aims to improve national capacities in the exploration and integrated management of groundwater resources, and enhance both, efficiency and effectiveness of public planning and policy making in the National Water Sector.

With the aim of setting an institutional framework for an effective Quality Assurance system in Iraq, UNESCO organized a technical workshop gathering key officials from the ministries of Education in Baghdad and Erbil to discuss international best practices and applicable models.

Baghdad, 17 October 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, condemns in the strongest terms the suicide bomb attack in Mwafaqiya village in Ninewa Province, killing and injuring dozens, most of them children and women.  “The United Nations pays particular attention to the protection of minority communities who continue suffering from heinous attacks, economic and social barriers,” Mr. Mladenov said.

Baghdad, 17 October 2013 – On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the United Nations wants to emphasize the importance of working on eradicating poverty through sustainable development programmes to create a more inclusive society in Iraq. 

Baghdad – The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is marking World Food Day on 16 October by highlighting the power of nutrition to transform individuals, societies and economies, and the need to make it central to all development efforts.

The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the string of bombings that have killed and wounded scores of people, including school children, across Iraq over the past days. He extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Iraq and wishes the wounded a speedy recovery.
