World Humanitarian Day on 19 August of every year honours the humanitarian workers who have given up their lives in the service of peace and humanity. It is the 17th anniversary of the truck bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad in which 22 colleagues, including Special Envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello, were killed and more than 150 wounded.

On World Humanitarian Day we honour the work of humanitarians who overcome huge challenges to save and improve the lives of millions of people.
