SRSG calls for quick government formation as the international community stands ready to support Iraq

Baghdad, 5 September 2014 - As the government formation process in Iraq nears the constitutional deadline, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, encourages all political parties to proceed in a spirit of compromise and quickly finalise the negotiations on the government programme and team.

“I encourage the Iraqi political leaders to finalise the government formation process within the constitutional timeline, and to ensure a fair representation of women and minority communities in the new government”, Mr. Mladenov said.  “Forming a new and inclusive government that has wide national support is critical to the future of the country”, he stressed.
Mr. Mladenov further underscored that “none of the security, social or political challenges that the country faces can be resolved without a new administration that can bring the country together, as well as continued international support against the threat from ISIL”.
“Today the world is watching Iraq and stands ready to extend immediate support to the new government in its efforts to address the challenges ahead”, he stated.
