Protection of Women and Girls in Mosul

Statement by Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNFPA, to the United Nations Population Fund, on the Protection of Women and Girls in Mosul

IOM Iraq press note - 18 October 2016: Iraq - Military operations to retake the ISIL-held city of Mosul began in the early hours of Sunday morning. In a worst-case scenario, the humanitarian operation in Mosul may be the single largest and most complex in the world in 2016. IOM stands ready to assist displaced populations across the country through an array of humanitarian responses.

Baghdad, Iraq, 18 October 2016 - With the start of the operation to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) is calling on the Iraqi people to unite in support of their country’s armed forces and is urging that every step be taken to avoid civilian casualties.

Monday 17 October – As the Government of Iraq has announced the launch of a major offensive on Mosul, I wish to reiterate UNESCO’s support to the population of Mosul, women, men and children who have suffered from violence and persecution over the past years, and who still are suffering. Nineveh (Mosul) is also one of the oldest cities of Mesopotamia, whose memory has been transmitted for centuries by people of all origins and all religions as a world symbol of dialogue between cultures and a medium of identity and memory for the Iraqi people. I call on all involved in military action to protect cultural heritage and refrain from any military use or targeting of cultural sites and monuments, in respect of obligations under international treaties.

BAGHDAD, 17 October 2016 – More than half a million children and their families in Mosul will be at extreme risk in the coming weeks, UNICEF warned today as a military operation to retake the northern Iraqi city gets under way.

14 October 2016: To prepare for the expected displacement of people fleeing Mosul during military operations to retake the city from ISIL, IOM, at the request of the Government of Iraq and in collaboration with the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, has agreed to construct emergency sites in Ninewa governorate. These will eventually provide shelter for up to 200,000 civilians who may be displaced in the first weeks of the military operations.

Baghdad, 22 August 2015 - The Acting Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG), Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, expressed his outrage at the news that ISIL had executed three women parliamentary candidates in Mosul City.

New York,21 July 2014 - The members of the Security Council express their deep concern over reports of threats against religious and ethnic minorities in Mosul and other parts of Iraq controlled by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), including the recent ultimatum to Christians to either leave the city, stay and pay a tribute, convert to Islam, or face imminent execution.

New York, 20 July 2014- The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the systematic persecution of minority populations in Iraq by Islamic State (IS) and associated armed groups. He is particularly disturbed by reports of threats against Christians in Mosul and other IS-controlled parts of Iraq, including an ultimatum to either convert, pay a tax, leave, or face imminent execution.

Baghdad, 20 July 2014 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, strongly condemns the persecution of minority religious communities, including Christians, Shia, Shabak, Turkmen or Yazidis in Mosul and the Ninewa province, following disturbing reports that members of these communities have come under direct attack and persecution by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and associated armed groups.
