ERBIL, 25 October, 2016— As Iraqi civilians are fleeing the ongoing conflict in Mosul, UNFPA Iraq has stepped up its response and delivered reproductive health (RH) services to women and girls in Iraq.

Baghdad, 24 Oct 2016: WHO and Ninewa Directorate of Health (DOH) have urgently reacted to treat over 1000 cases of suffocation arrived at Qayarra, Ijhala, and Makhmour PHCCs as of 23, October 2016 caused by the continued Sulfur plumes resulting from the burning of Al Mishraq Sulfur factory north of Qayarra District in Ninewa governorate.

20 October 2016 Iraq - IOM Iraq visited the recently retaken area of Qayara to hand over the Qayara Airstrip emergency site to contractors, and to distribute 350 winter non-food item kits to populations from al-Hud, an area recently retaken from ISIL.

Erbil, 20 October, 2016 – UNICEF this week managed to reach Al Houd, a town just south of Mosul that was retaken by Iraqi security forces just two days prior, and deliver clean water to some of the thousands of families that have been caught up in this conflict.

GENEVA (21 October 2016) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein called for the protection of civilians to be at the forefront of military planning as the Iraqi Government and associated forces attempt to re-take Mosul, amid reports that fighters from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, ISIL, are using civilians as human shields.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and its partners in Duhok have begun to help the first influx of displaced Iraqis fleeing villages near Mosul, as a government offensive to re-take Iraq’s second-largest city continues.

In a worst-case scenario, the humanitarian operation in Mosul may be the single largest and most complex in the world in 2016.
