Baghdad – Amman, 8 September 2010: On the occasion of International Literacy Day, UNESCO calls on national institutions and civil society to join forces to promote literacy for all as a tool for inclusive and sustainable development in Iraq.

Baghdad, 17 August 2010 (WFP) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is targeting unemployment in some of the areas most affected by violence and insecurity in Iraq through expanding its cash-for-work programme to reach more than 11,000 vulnerable people and help them meet their daily food needs.

Baghdad, 5 August 2010- In a report published today, the Government of Iraq and the United Nations presented the progress made in a number of areas towards achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Iraq. These areas are: reducing hunger and child mortality and promoting gender equality. However, there is slower progress reported in other crucial areas: enrolment in primary education, unemployment and access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services.

 UN News Centre - 12 July 2010 – Some crucial elements – including an oil-metering system – must still be implemented to allow Iraq to fully manage its own export revenues and funnel them towards development needs, a senior United Nations official told the Security Council today.

Baghdad, 11 May 2010 – Today marked a historic moment for the United Nations and the Government of Iraq, with the signing of the first United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Iraq for the period 2011 – 2014. This endorsement solidifies a strong foundation of partnership and cooperation between the United Nations Country Team, the Government of Iraq and national partners, and sets the tone for a new framework of development for the country.

Kirkuk, 04 May 2010 – With renewed commitment to implement a robust vaccination programme and to provide every mother and child in Iraq with vital vaccinations, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Iraq in collaboration with the Health Directorate in Kirkuk recently held a two-day workshop to kick-start the vaccination programme in the governorate.
 

Baghdad, 3 May 2010 -- A call for a Freedom of Information Law was supported by a chorus of over 1000 journalists, reporters and bloggers from all over Iraq, in observance of World Press Freedom Day. Attendees included Mr. Mufid Al-Jazairy, former MP and former Chairman of the Media and Culture Commission on the Council of Representatives, Dr. Burhan Al-Shawi, Chief Executive Officer of the Communication and Media Commission, Mr. Muayad Al-Lami, Chairman of the Iraqi Journalist Syndicate, and Major General Qassim Atta, Spokesperson for Baghdad Operational Command.

Iraq’s Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are estimated at approximately 1.5 million. Enduring hardships, lack of opportunities and scarcity of resources, they strive to make ends meet while remaining optimistic about the future. Many of them took part in the Parliamentary Election, held on 7 March 2010. From their lens, some recount the reasons behind casting their ballots.
