Baghdad, 10 December 2010 (UNICEF). As Iraq marks International Human Rights day today, government officials, community leaders and thousands of children across Iraq’s 18 governorates have concluded nearly three weeks of events celebrating the 21st anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Building on nationwide events in 2010 where the highest level authorities and children representatives called for the full protection of children’s rights in Iraq, this year’s events focused on a call to establish Child Rights Committees in all 18 Governorates.


7th November, 2010. Baghdad - As a result of UN-HABITAT’s assistance to Iraq’s Ministry of Construction and Housing, a National Housing Policy was prepared which aims to address Iraq’s housing shortage, currently estimated at approximately 2 million units. The pro-poor policy was prepared through a consultative process over 18 months, involving a range of Government and non- Government stakeholders, with the support of national and international experts. The policy shifts the Government of Iraq’s emphasis from being a primary provider of housing to enabling the scaling up of housing delivery through supporting the engagement of private sector and other actors in the sector.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), represented by its head, the United Nations Special Representative for the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ad Melkert, together with senior representatives of the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes operating in Iraq, marked United Nations Day by holding an interactive dialogue with senior representatives of Iraqi media at UNAMI headquarters in Baghdad.

Baghdad, Iraq, 20 October 2010 (UNICEF) - Celebrating Global Handwashing Day on October 15th, over thirty thousand school children across Iraq today concluded activities over the past four days promoting the importance of handwashing. Under the slogan “Clean hands save lives”, students in 26 schools were shown how to wash their hands correctly and how stomach aches can be avoided if hands are washed.


On 16 October 2010, World Food Day enters its 30th year. The theme of this year’s observance, “United against hunger”, seeks to recognize the efforts made in the fight against world hunger by all actors, at all levels; and urges us to be even more united to do more.

 16 October 2010- World Food Day is celebrated throughout the world every year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. World Food Day aims to heighten public awareness of the plight of the world\'s hungry and malnourished and to encourage people world wide take action against hunger. More than 150 countries observe this event every year. First observed in 1981, each year World Food Day highlights a particular theme on which to focus activities. The theme for this year is "UNITED AGAINST HUNGER" and seeks to recognize the efforts made in the fight against world hunger by all actors.

15 October 2010 - ROME –The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today marks World Food Day by celebrating the bold leadership and outstanding contributions of national governments toward lasting solutions to hunger and malnutrition.


Baghdad, 4 October 2010- The Ministry of Construction and Housing (MoCH) in Iraq marked World Habitat Day by launching the Iraq National Housing Policy in a ceremony held in Baghdad.

Representatives from the Ministries of Education, Higher Education and Finance from Baghdad and the Kurdish Regional Government gathered in Erbil during a three-day meeting for the modernisation of the education sector in Iraq.

Erbil, 03 October 2010. “I welcome the readiness and efforts by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to receive internally displaced persons from all over Iraq and to provide them with safety and security regardless of their origin. At the same time, I urge the KRG to develop a comprehensive plan which addresses both the immediate social needs as well as durable solutions for all internally displaced persons in the region”, stated Mr. Walter Kaelin, the Representative of the Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, in Erbil at the end of his one week visit to Iraq.
