Statement by the United Nations in Iraq

Baghdad, 05 September 2020 - In light of a recent incident involving the detonation of an improvised Explosive Device (IED) as a UN humanitarian convoy passed by on a road in Ninewa Governorate, injuring a staff member and damaging the vehicle, the United Nations wishes to reiterate the following:

03 September 2020 In a report released today, titled “Coming Together for Refugee Education,” UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, predicts that unless immediate and bold action is taken by the international community to beat back the catastrophic effects of COVID-19 on refugee education, the potential of millions of young refugees living in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities will be further threatened. The data in the report is based on the gross enrolment figures from the 2019 school cycle.

Baghdad, 3 September 2020 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Iraq, is today launching Iraq’s first-ever anti-corruption forum for women, highlighting the integral role women play in combating corruption in the country.

Baghdad, Iraq, 1 September 2020 – With numbers soaring since early June, as of the end of August Iraq has confirmed 231,177 cases of COVID-19 and 6959 deaths. To stem the tide against the pandemic, UNICEF is supporting the training of an estimated 30,000 health care providers at the primary care level, with the aim of disseminating key information about COVID-19 infection, prevention and control, with a special focus on preventing infection among health providers.

BAGHDAD (30 August 2020) – A UN report on enforced disappearances calls for independent and effective investigations to establish the fate of approximately 1,000 civilian men and boys who disappeared during military operations against ISIL (Da’esh) in Anbar Governorate in 2015-2016, and to hold perpetrators accountable as well as provide justice and redress to victims’ families.

BAGHDAD/GENEVA, 27 August 2020 – Despite promising steps by the current Government of Iraq concerning human rights violations and abuses committed in the context of recent demonstrations, accountability remains elusive, according to a UN report released on Thursday.
