WFP has established a number of field kitchens with its local partners in Dahuk Governorate since the August wave of displacement. However, the area remains a grave concern.

As conflict rages in Iraq and in neighbouring Syria, tens of thousands of displaced people have sought refuge in Duhok Province. UNFPA is working around the clock to meet the needs of both Syrian refugees and internally displaced Iraqis in the area.

On World Humanitarian Day, the UN Iraq Renews its Commitment to Relieve the Plight of the Displaced

Baghdad, 19 August 2014 – “Today, 19 August, as we remember our fallen colleagues who perished in an attack on the UN Headquarters in Baghdad 11 years ago, we must also pay tribute to the countless national and international humanitarian workers in Iraq who continue to face danger and adversity to bring lifesaving assistance to those in need, and remember their sacrifices”, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov said.

An estimated 1.2 million Iraqis have been forced to flee their homes, as a result of violence that has gripped the country since the beginning of the year.
At the beginning of July, the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced a US$500 million donation to support the UN and its humanitarian partners respond to the crisis.

Iraqis have cast their ballots for the Council of Representatives, or legislature, in what will be the country's third national election under the 2005 Constitution. On the same day, voters in the Kurdistan Region have also voted for their Governorate Council representatives. UNAMI

The situation concerning Iraq - Second report of the Secretary-General pursuant to paragraph 6 of resolution 2110 (2013) (S/2014/190)

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, accompanied by High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and OCHA chief Valerie Amos, travel to northern Iraq to meet refugees from Syria, assess their situation and show solidarity as well as thanking host communities.

Baghdad, 25 November 2013 – Briefing the Security Council today on the Secretary-General’s first report pursuant to paragraph 6 of resolution 2110 of 2013 (S/2013/661), on the activities of UNAMI and the most recent developments in Iraq, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov acknowledged that “Iraq’s challenges can no longer be considered in isolation from the broader risks that face the region.”
