Baghdad, 1 February 2010 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert expressed his profound shock and sadness at the mass killing and wounding of innocent pilgrims heading to the city of Kabala, to participate in the religious rite of Arba’en.
The SRSG described today’s suicide bombing as “a horrific crime committed against defenseless journeying pilgrims, practicing their faith”.
The SRSG extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, expressing his support for the Iraqis in their resolve to continue advancing peace, stability and national reconciliation.
