Voter Registration Update Reaches Half Way Point for KRG Election

Baghdad-31 May 2009-The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura congratulated the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and people of the Northern Region of Kurdistan (KRG) for completing a successful and peaceful first week of the voter registration update ahead of KRG elections scheduled for 25 July. He noted that eighty nine voter registration update centers successfully opened across KRG and in Baghdad on May 25th. During the first week 40, 476 people visited the centers to verify or correct their information so that they are properly registered to vote.  IHEC reported that 1,109 observers and 650 political agents that visited the eighty nine centers to ensure proper procedures are being followed.

Mr. de Mistura said that the "turnout and participation in the voter registration update in the KRG is a positive signal for greater participation in the national voter registration update scheduled by IHEC to begin in early August for the Council of Representatives election in January 2010."  He urged everyone in the KRG to visit the registration update centers in the coming week to ensure they are properly listed on the IHEC voters list before the process is completed.

It is estimated that up to two million people will be eligible to vote in the upcoming elections.

Political parties and observer groups are encouraged to accredit and to observe the voter registration update period as well as the Election Day itself. Further details can be obtained from the IHEC website at www.ihec.iq .
