The delegation included representatives of the Christian, Shabak, Yazidi and Sabean Mandean communities as well as members of the Council of Representatives. The meeting focused on the situation of the minority components and their role in the Iraqi society and political life.

SRSG Kobler welcomed the delegation and emphasized the importance of empowering all Iraqis communities to participate and contribute to decision-making on all matters that affect the Iraqi people in all spheres.

“Iraq is one of the richest nations in terms of its ethnic and religious diversity and this wealth must be preserved and protected as it can be the driving force for protecting democracy in Iraq”, SRSG Kobler said.

"Iraqi components are one of the Mission’s important mandated priorities and this meeting is an important occasion for continuing dialogue and discussion on existing concerns and to identify practical ways of addressing them”, SRSG Kobler said.  He indicated his keenness on ensuring that such meetings be held periodically.

In concluding the meeting, SRSG Kobler expressed UNAMI readiness to continue supporting the Iraqi authorities in protecting all Iraqi ethnic and religious components and the promotion of their rights in accordance with the Iraqi constitution, including a fair representation in the political system in Iraq.
