“It is an honour for me to visit the National Museum and to be able to pay tribute to the great and rich culture of this country,” Mr. Kobler said. “I greatly admire the ancient culture of Mesopotamia and the museum makes an important contribution to keeping Iraq’s cultural heritage alive. It is truly inspiring.”

Mr. Kobler expressed his hope that artefacts that were looted in 2003 would continue to be returned to the collections and that the museum would soon be reopened to the public.

“I wish that this museum will once again find its place in Iraqi society, as it contributes to increasing awareness of culture and of the country’s wealth of cultural riches,” he said.
