"It is of utmost importance to ensure that the appointment process of IHEC Board of Commissioners is transparent and based on professional criteria to identify independent individuals with electoral expertise as such criteria not only will guarantee the credibility of the commissioners, but also the credibility of IHEC as an institution and all upcoming electoral processes in the country, " SRSG Kobler stated. He emphasized the need to ensure women’s representation in the next IHEC Board of Commissioners.

SRSG Kobler emphasized the importance of the contribution of civil society organizations as observers in the selection process and called on all concerned to benefit from such contribution.

In concluding the meeting, SRSG Kobler urged the Committee of Experts and the Council of Representatives to ensure timely completion of the selection process prior to the expiration of the mandate of the current IHEC Board of Commissioners by the end of April 2012 to ensure that the Provincial Council Elections due to take place 9 months from now are carried out on schedule.
