SRSG calls for utmost restraint and protection of civilians in Anbar

Baghdad, 03 June 2014 - In light of reports concerning the recent bombing on Falluja city, which reportedly killed and injured dozens of people, including children and women, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Mr. Nickolay Mladenov calls for utmost restraint in the ongoing military operations and for ensuring that civilians are protected from violence.

“All sides must ensure that civilians are protected, that they have unhindered access to hospitals and humanitarian aid, and that they are able to safely leave the area of fighting”, Mr. Mladenov said.

“I also urge Iraqi political leaders to use every opportunity and urgently achieve a substantial and effective resolution of the Anbar crisis that has bled the country for too long. An inclusive solution must be found that allows for those displaced by the fighting to safely return to their homes and for reconstruction to begin”, Mr. Mladenov added.
