Iraq | World Humanitarian Day (19 August 2020)

World Humanitarian Day on 19 August of every year honours the humanitarian workers who have given up their lives in the service of peace and humanity. It is the 17th anniversary of the truck bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad in which 22 colleagues, including Special Envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello, were killed and more than 150 wounded.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and as we remember the victims of that tragic day in 2003, we affirm that their sacrifices and dedication to the ideals of the United Nations will always serve as a beacon for us all in fulfilling our duties as staff of this organization.
