15 October 2010 - ROME –The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today marks World Food Day by celebrating the bold leadership and outstanding contributions of national governments toward lasting solutions to hunger and malnutrition.

 

Baghdad, 4 October 2010- The Ministry of Construction and Housing (MoCH) in Iraq marked World Habitat Day by launching the Iraq National Housing Policy in a ceremony held in Baghdad.

Representatives from the Ministries of Education, Higher Education and Finance from Baghdad and the Kurdish Regional Government gathered in Erbil during a three-day meeting for the modernisation of the education sector in Iraq.

Erbil, 03 October 2010. “I welcome the readiness and efforts by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to receive internally displaced persons from all over Iraq and to provide them with safety and security regardless of their origin. At the same time, I urge the KRG to develop a comprehensive plan which addresses both the immediate social needs as well as durable solutions for all internally displaced persons in the region”, stated Mr. Walter Kaelin, the Representative of the Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, in Erbil at the end of his one week visit to Iraq.

Baghdad, 3 October (UNESCO) – The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched today a scientific survey of Iraq’s groundwater in an effort to improve government capacity to address water scarcity in the country. 
Iraq is currently facing severe water shortages across most parts of the country, with over 7.6 million Iraqis lacking access to safe drinking water, and an agriculture sector suffering from years of drought.  Absent until now, this complete picture of groundwater resources in the country will provide national and local authorities the tools to identify accurately and manage sustainably this precious resource.

Baghdad, 29 September 2010- “The complexity of the internal displacement situation in Iraq requires stronger efforts by the Government and the international community to protect the human rights of displaced persons, address their immediate needs and find durable solutions to end their displacement. This can only be done on the basis of an inclusive and comprehensive strategy that takes into account all communities affected by displacement, including host communities and communities in areas of return” said Walter Kaelin, Representative of the Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, during his 8 day visit to Iraq.

Erbil, 26 September 2010 Representatives of the Kurdistan Parliament, the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Presidency Council of the Kurdistan Region, as well as International NGOs, agreed yesterday on recommendations on the draft of the new KRG NGO law following a three-day Roundtable on the topic involving all the stakeholders.
 

Safe Blood Saves Lives”: In the last few years, the Government of Iraq has taken the strategic decision to strengthen blood transfusion services (BTS) as part of its commitment to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of health care system, particularly the timely responsiveness of Emergency Medical Services to reduce health consequences of emergencies, crises and conflicts and save avoidable losses of lives.

Baghdad, 17 August 2010 (WFP) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is targeting unemployment in some of the areas most affected by violence and insecurity in Iraq through expanding its cash-for-work programme to reach more than 11,000 vulnerable people and help them meet their daily food needs.
