Kirkuk, Iraq - The Development Coordination Office (DCO) of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) hosted a briefing session on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for National NGOs (NNGOs) based in Kirkuk. A total of 25 participants representing the NNGOS attended the session on 13 February 2019, which aimed to raise awareness of the NNGOs based in Kirkuk on the SDGs and Agenda 2030.

On 28 January 2019, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert met with local authority members in Mosul including the Deputy Governor, the Provincial Council Chair, his Deputy and a number of Provincial Council Members, as well as the Mayor of Mosul. SRSG Hennis-Plasschaert discussed ways in which the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the United Nations in general can assist the local authorities and people of Ninewa in their efforts to return their lives to normal. The SRSG also discussed ways of enhancing and strengthening cooperation and coordination with the local authorities for UN activities in the area.

Sulaimaniyah, 16-17 and Duhok Iraq 23-24 December 2018 – The Erbil Human Rights Office (HRO) at the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) successfully ran a two-day training, titled UN Mechanisms for the Protection of Women and Minorities, for a number of participants from NGOs and the Directorate of Following-up Violence against Women in Sulaimaniyah and Duhok. The participants represented civil society organizations, being activists and advocators of women and minorities rights in the Kurdistan Region.

Baghdad, 26 December 2018: With support from film and theatre representatives in Mosul, Erbil, Baghdad and Basra, UNAMI Human Rights Office (HRO) and implementing partners, Art City Film and TV Production, will hold a national short film festival and competition on human rights and minorities in Iraq.

Kirkuk, Iraq, 11 December 2018 – Human rights go hand in hand with stability and prosperity, the head of UNAMI’s Office in Kirkuk said at a celebration in Kirkuk to mark the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event was hosted by the Kirkuk Office of the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights.
